CALL FOR PAPERS
"Back to the Past? Discourse and Violence in Memory, Displacement and Identity. "
October 18-20, 2006
The graduate students of the Department of Romance Languages and Literatures
at the University of Florida invite you to participate in an Interdisciplinary Colloquium
that will explore cultural and linguistic productions resulting from several processes
such as immigration, memory recovery, unemployment, and language in society.


Keynote Speakers:

Dr. Andrés Avellaneda, Literature, University of Florida
Prof. Octavio Escobar, Writer, Universidad de Caldas, Colombia.
Dr. Martha Hardman, Anthropological Linguistics, University of Florida
Dr. Andrew Lynch, Sociolinguistics, University of Miami
Dr. Cristina Moreiras, Literature and Film Studies, University of
Michigan

This Conference welcomes papers in the fields of Latin American, Peninsular, US Latino
Literatures, Linguistics and Cultures. Some suggested topics are:

Displacement and migration Bilingualism/Mulitilingualism
Indigenous knowledge Language and gender
Social movements Spanish in the U.S.
Labor and literature Linguistic Change and Variation
Memory recovery Linguistic Ideology
Religious and other cultural practices Language and violence
Exile Pragmatics in First and Second
Gender violence Language
Nations and Identities

All critical approaches are welcome and encouraged. Papers (in Spanish, English or
Portuguese) should be 8 pages long (double space); i.e. no more than 20 minutes of
reading. Participants must submit a one page abstract to: for linguistics:
linguisticsabstracts@yahoo.com; for literatures and other fields: kvazquez@ufl.edu, by
Sept. 9, 2006. Please, include the following information with your abstract: title of
presentation, name of participant, affiliation, address, telephone and e-mail.
Donation Fee for students is $ 20, for non-students is $ 30. The selection committee will
respond to proposals by September 10, 2006.
